Jestli\u017ee se dodr\u017e\u00ed stejn\u00e1 frakce a ostr\u00e9 hrany jednotliv\u00fdch zrnek, k zachycov\u00e1n\u00ed hrub\u00fdch ne\u010distot na jejich povrchu doch\u00e1z\u00ed ve filtra\u010dn\u00ed n\u00e1dob\u011b stejn\u00e9, nebo dokonce i men\u0161\u00ed velikosti. Zeolit v\u0161ak dok\u00e1\u017ee mnohem v\u00edce.  Drobn\u00e9 otv\u016frky \u2013 zvl\u00e1\u0161tnost\u00ed zeolitu je jeho vnit\u0159n\u00ed uspo\u0159\u00e1d\u00e1n\u00ed. Kdybyste si jej prohl\u00e9dli pod mikroskopem, spat\u0159\u00edte soustavu mal\u00fdch dutinek, je to s trochou nads\u00e1zky \u0159e\u010deno houba, kter\u00e1 m\u016f\u017ee nas\u00e1t velk\u00e9 mno\u017estv\u00ed plynu \u010di tekutiny. Pokud bychom objem vnit\u0159n\u00edch dutinek p\u0159evedli do plo\u0161n\u00e9ho rozm\u011bru, zjist\u00edme, \u017ee v pouh\u00e9 jedin\u00e9 hrsti kam\u00ednk\u016f se ukr\u00fdv\u00e1 prostor o velikosti atletick\u00e9ho stadionu. Iontov\u00e1 v\u00fdm\u011bna \u2013 velk\u00e9 kouzlo spo\u010d\u00edv\u00e1 ve v\u00fdm\u011bn\u011b iont\u016f, t\u00e9to unik\u00e1tn\u00ed vlastnosti m\u016f\u017eeme vyu\u017e\u00edt nap\u0159. v baz\u00e9nech, kde se ve vod\u011b hromad\u00ed \u010dpavek (amoniak \u2013 NH3) z lidsk\u00e9ho potu, a k jeho eliminaci je t\u0159eba nasadit chemick\u00e9 prost\u0159edky.
